The potential of 5G technologies for smarty city solutions has captured the attention of cities worldwide. The value of the smart cities industry is expected to reach $1.45 trillion globally by 2020 [1].
The 5GCity project that focuses on live demonstration of 5G services in three cities already going through digital transformation: Bristol, Barcelona, Lucca, had an intensive activity during SCEWC 2018 with the moderation in a dedicated session The Next Level of Connectivity for Industries and Society; session specially designed in the Digital Transformation to go deep into critical urban issues. 5GCity consortium was also involved in the organization and implementation of the 5GCity Side Event, with the 5G Smart City Vertical Use Case Awards. The award aimed to ignite the generation of Smart City Use Case Ideas that could be manifested given the 5G technologies. Since Smart Cities are a recognized vertical sector of 5G, the Smart City Use Cases could span everything from arts and culture to work and employment with a focus on end-user benefits i.e., the citizen.

The Evaluation panel awarded with a sum of Euros 4000/- the three best 5G Smart City Use Case ideas. The panel was composed by:

• Mr. David Ferrer, Secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and
Digital Society from the Catalan Government

- 1st Prize to: Instituto Empresa & KU Leuven – Idea: Parking Facilitation (Simon Abboud and Dana Hawi)
- 2 nd Prize to: Martel Innovation – Idea: Green Route (Michele Facca and Monique Calistri)
