Telefonica, 5GBarcelona set up IoT and 5G testing lab

Telefonica and 5GBarcelona are set to launch a new testing lab for 5G and Internet of Things technology at the Pier01 complex in the Palau del Mar near the port of Barcelona, reports EFE.

The 200-square-meter open space will be located in the offices of Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) and is designed to allow companies, SMEs and startups to try out their devices and projects using the infrastructure necessary for the deployment of 5G connectivity.

The ultimate aim is to shorten time to market of 5G-oriented products and services as well as accelerate the take up of future 5G architecture, said the report, adding that the lab will initially cost around EUR 2 million.

The 5GBarcelona initiative was presented in February by the Regional Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Hall, the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, the i2CAT Foundation, the CTTC (Centre Tecnologic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya), Atos and the UPC (Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya) with the participation of companies such as Seat, Huawei, Telefonica, Vodafone and Hispasat.
